Nearest Vacancy

I saw a sign today that supplies a lesson in product design.

At the top of the ascending driving ramp on each floor of a downtown Atlanta parking deck is a neon sign that reads, "NEAREST VACANCY".

I asked myself, "What does it mean?"

"Should I turn right? Left?"

"Is this a piece of art by Ed Ruscha?"

"Is it an existential question?"

Does it mean I should find an available space? Wow thanks for that. I would never have guessed.

Lesson: Don't add a feature to a product or service unless it serves a clear purpose and would damage the product if discarded.
