Misnomers

  1. The United States Department of Defense. Used most often for offense. Should be The Department of the Military.
  2. The Honorable Judge... no more honorable than most of us.
  3. The Right Reverend... not usually right, and usually less reverend than most of us.
  4. His Holiness. No, Joseph Ratzinger.
  5. The Patriot Act. An act dedicated solely to massive expansion of government powers and intrusion on citizen rights cannot appropriately be called patriotic. Should be The Government Expanded Powers Act, or Emergency Powers Act.
  6. The War on Terror. How do you attack an abstract concept? Should be The War on Terrorists.
  7. The Internal Revenue Service. Does not generate revenue. It only taxes revenue and activities. Should be The Taxation Service.
  8. Your education. Usually refers to your schooling, and as Mark Twain said, "I never let my schooling interfere with my education."
-Forsyth
